So many of us
justify our amazingly blessed lives while doing nothing for those who
suffer, don't we? This is something I speak to my kids often about.
Seems like no matter how much I talk, it just doesn't compute since they
have no concept. I'm not sure I had any concept until I sent a week in
Haiti. I came home, stood in my yard and wept openly on several
occasions since the shed where I store my lawn mower is a nicer
structure than the houses we were there to build. I mean, just think of
that. The place where I store my rake, shovel and various power tools is
nicer, bigger and better built than the homes that we were building for
people to live and raise their children in. That's hard to accept.
None of us here likes to think about what our money could really do around the world. We justify by saying things like "I've earned it" or "I can't help what's going on there anyway". But I tell you, I have come to believe that we are so richly blessed not just for our own sake but for the sake of others. I believe we have been entrusted with multitudes of blessings so that we can re-administer those blessings to others. It's the least we can do for the least of these.
Keep being a voice in the wilderness. We all need it.

Earth can sustain 10 BILLION PEOPLE living at the level of people in Africa, India.... Know how many American style consumers it can sustain? 2 billion. The Indians, Africans, South Americans, Haitians... are Lazarus. We Americans? We build storage sheds 'for our surplus grain.' And Lazarus can't cross the chasm to put a drop of water on our parched tongues.

Are you saying that to the parents of the 26,000 kids that will die tomorrow because we with resources spend it on things like our weekends, rather than the clean water, food, and education that would save them? Or the 4 billion of our brothers and sisters existing on $4 per day and less, again, because, ENTIRELY because, we with resources spend it on stuff like our weekends? Oh my. What I am saying is mean, cruel and hateful, if the City folks in Hunger Games were just fine, or the nice folks living in Elysium. I'll take zero offense and maybe some relief if you unfriend me. It is NEVER my intent to torture others, only to offer.... Your choice. Your brother, either way.

Mike: Start, I call bullshit. We often (maybe not often enough, but often) GIVE our resources to those countries where folks exist on $4 a day, in hopes of helping those less fortunate and enabling them to live in a more secure economic environment. What happens frequently is their own governments line their pockets with our donated resources, their own people hate one another so much that they're so busy killing one another that they don't care about education, clean water, infrastructure, etc. So do you think it's awful of Bill and Melinda Gates to have an adventurous weekend when they are using their own resources to stop fatal diseases in those faraway places? Is no one able to enjoy an adventurous weekend without guilt? Your life view is very skewed and unbalanced if the answer is YES to my question!
