Bike Traveler group: How does a person bike camp in frigid areas, for weeks at a time, in regards to drying wet, sweaty clothes?
James reply: I have cumulative weeks and months of experience with this. Number of things come to mind when I think of what makes it manageable for me. Managing my layers while exercising so as to minimize how much clothing gets damp or wet. I use the cold environment to my advantage while exercising to minimize sweat. The last several days in weather between 25 and 35 degrees Fahrenheit after warming up cycling I removed all layers except for my base layer and put windbreaker over that. I was perfectly fine while exercising and only got one layer wet. I have also at times managed my arrival such that in the preceding 15 minutes or half an hour I would move from highly vigorous exercise to cause me to sweat to something less than that but warm enough I figured to be evaporating the clothing. If the next day I figure it will be warm enough and sunny enough that I can dry my base layer I'll strip it off and put on a dry one when I complete exercising and then of course layer up with warm stuff. If I do not figure that the next day will be good for thawing and drying out a wet base layer I'll take Extra Care in having it as dry as possible before I finish exercising and then I'll layer up with it on and use my body to dry it out.

And now Sol has a proper seat
And now, we have a proper seat, thanks to this incredibly generous, able, visionary engineer designer Builder Khanh Dam. Demonstrably there may be no one that appreciates the elf more than I do. Or who uses it more seriously, certainly not many. It is an engineering Marvel, visionary. Having a properly adjustable seat, height, forward aft, seat back angle, like any respectable recumbent trike for a serious cyclist as oppposed to to those using it as an electric vehicle with pedals, no disrespect to anyone, it's not a luxury, it's an absolute necessity.

Just under 30 Watts electric per miles seems to be our maximum efficiency, 50 watts per mile total. Wonderful.
If I Target eight or eight and a half miles an hour when I'm peddling as opposed to coasting downhill, that seems to be the Sweet Spot, slower than that seems to get into motor efficiency issues, faster apparently wind drag starts becoming significant. And eight or eight and a half miles an hour works perfectly well for me. That's about 40 miles per day, recently half of the electricity or no more than two-thirds that the sun is giving me, and about as long as my but can stand, and about three or four thousand calories per day beyond base metabolism which is an additional 1500 calories per day. This is absolutely the most wonderful machine that Khanh created, and Rex inspired. It is such an ethical way for James to exist, such an incredibly light footprint on the children's future, and it is very powerful at stirring the occasional soul. Below is a rough estimate of how the next 30 days will be spent.

Sol is delighted to go slow on steep, but not thrilled.
So there was a lot of climbing today, not much distance, not much solar energy because of all the trees and clouds yesterday, we ended the day at about 60% battery, maybe 50%. so James decided to set the contribution factor for Saul at 3 instead of 4 for each watt that James produces. He expected to see considerably better than the 50 to watts per-mile that he's been demanding of Sol's electricity. Not so. The conclusion being that Sol is delighted to go at the low speed that less contribution from Sol yields, more time at two-and-a-half or three miles an hour, but not without a price. The motors were cool, but none the less clearly not running at Peak efficiency. Interesting lesson.

Cycling blog long overdue. Recap of the last 2 months by speaking of today.
Item. Savoring and Treasuring 100% energy Extraction and investment every inch of travel. Allowing not any second to escape without making an energy contribution. It is a wonderful thing. Not intuitive But very natural when the body keeps in it mind. Update. A round dish sort of object emerged again today about 2 inches toward the groin from the knee. And what was most helpful to implement this item was to allow no instant when there was not upward action by the thigh complimented by downward action by the other thigh exiting a rolling energy on that object.
Item. Adding power with 100% Engagement 100% of the time summoning power rather than attempting to periodically force . Summoning power is a Conceptual sort of thing. Requires considerable faith but today that doesn't mean a lot of mental effort. Just keeping it in mind. This is a natural partner with this 1st point above. Savoring Every inch of travel as an opportunity to feel contribution of energy and when more or less energy is required attempting that within the constant velocity cadence of the moment by summoning additional power or energy Every fraction of an inch of travel
item through Every other element of the last 2 months is it play. Probably largely unconscious today.
Item. Thee feet and therefore the legs weight are hanging on the pedals which is Ana notion of rest and also correlates with the proper Relaxation Virtual limpness of the lower legs from the Upper part of the shin forward All the way through the toes.
Item. Constant velocity stare step.
Item. Note. The metrics for this 1st day of resumed travel are certainly respectable. at 212 watts per hour.
Item. Note. The experience of power is in the thighs and as far as the Part of the thighs closest to the knee. If James tries to explain it it is not unlike the cute nursing action of a cat's paws but James is reaching for that. but that's what it's like.

The sides of the spherical object, the cylindrical object vertical between the knees is where the speed of rotation, the velocity is found.
How many times before James has realized this he does not recall. It has been operating so many of The Times that everything was going well. But if it was brought to conscious competence before it has been lost and forgotten. Alzheimer's? Whatever.
With all the wonderful revelations of yesterday and they probably are, they were not sufficient from the 1st 40 minutes to return that wonderful performance at the end. It took a new element being brought to mind . That the Side of the object is where the current velocity and therefore the necessary velocity is to be found. Worth remembering maybe every trip at the beginning?
item. Drop the Heel a little bit. Dropped the Heel a little bit.
Item. Watch the size of the object at the knees. It matters. The task is to move the knees past synchronized that vertical cylindrical object. Today the diameter of the knees was a bit too wide so the proper leverage point vs that object kept throwing the body out of whack. Too small is not good but too large is not either.
