I've for the first time for me, gone through Jesus word's in the Bible from Mark, who wrote soonest after Jesus death, thru Luke, Matthew and then John - chronologically according to the writings. JOHN is the one that turned Jesus teachings of Brotherhood, into a cult following of Jesus. Oh My God.
To my question in the title. The answer is, well, we'd have no nuclear reactors, for example, because by virtue of making Einstein a cult figure to be worshiped, we'd in one stroke have A. shifted focus from his teachings to him, and B. discredited his teachings as things that couldn't stand on their own but needed to be taken on faith.
Some of my favorite teachings are in John, but he and Paul, whatever their wrongheaded, but good intentions may have been, they Crucified Jesus in a way that the Jews and Romans never could, and He's been Dead ever since, and soon we join him - Dead, all of Creation.
